The founder of “Lagidze Waters” – worldwide known not only in Georgia and loveable non-alcoholic beverages – public figure Mitrophane Lagidze was born in 1896 in the village Cholevi of Kutaisi province in the family of a nobleman Ermalo Lagidze and Gulchina Ugrexelidze.
The distinctive and unforgettable taste of “Lagidze Waters” was being created in details with the respect of all the norms of a recipe. The fruits were selected according to the different regions of Georgia. Mitrophane was monitoring and controlling the whole process.
14-years old Mitrophane started working in Kutaisi in the pharmaceutical shop owned by a Polish. However young Lagidze didn`t wish to become a pharmacist, from this moment the history of famous Georgian lemonade “Lagidze Waters” has begun. Mitrophane was itself very devoted and hard-working. He studied deeply the manufacturing process of non-alcoholic beverages production, which was based on the usage of only natural fruits.
Mitrophane created the unique recipe of lemonade, which was based only on the usage of natural ingredients.
One of the famous Georgian painter Gigo Zaziashvili created the trademark and the label, that were designed for the factories in Tbilisi and Kutaisi. In 1900 Mitrophane Lagidze independently built a lemonade factory and began the production of natural lemonades, that soon gained popularity in the whole Western Georgia. Georgian writer Akaki Tsereteli dedicated promptly the poem to the “Lagidze Waters”, opened in Kutaisi.
Mitriphane Lagidze travelled to Germany and France where he had studied the manufacturing of non-alcoholic beverages including the new technology and mechanism itself. When he returned he was first who imported the freezing systems for the preparation of artificial ice, which supplied other different regions of Georgia except Kutaisi. Mitrophane started importing glass bottles from France where he also started printing the etiquettes for his own brand. On the label was represented the woman with traditional Georgian headwear, who was Mitrophane`s mother. The following words were written on the label: “Demand it everywhere. It has the unique taste and smell. Beware of forgeries.” The sellers of “Lagidze Waters” were attracting the customers by telling them: “If you want to be beautiful and attractive drink “Lagidze Waters”
Mitrophane built the first electrical power station in Kutaisi that supplied the whole Kutaisi with electric power. He was first who started the manufacturing of barite.
With the aid and support of A.Tsereteli and I. Chavchavadze Mitrophane opened the shop of “Lagidze Waters” in Tbilisi on Golovini avenue (now Rustaveli avenue). The shop soon became a “calling card” of the city and people`s admirable place. “Lagidze Waters” were bought as a present by the merchants and travellers who visited Tbilisi. Particularly it served as the gift for nobles in Iran.
“Lagidze Waters” were evaluated on a high scale in Georgia and not only. However in 1913 on the exhibition in Saint Petersburg “Lagidze Waters” took two golden and the silver medals for its highest quality and dignity.
In Vienna on the international exhibition of the beverages “Lagidze Waters” won golden and silver medals.
Located on Rustaveli avenue Lagidze factory was destroyed due to the fire, as a result Mitrophane moved the business to his own basement. But Soviet government forced him to leave the basement too, because the place served as a home for people. After this incident Mitrophane knew that the cellar was lost forever, himself e gave his brand shop in the ownership of Bolsheviki. However this fact didn`t prevent the manufacturing process of “Lagidze Waters” and Mitrophane continued controlling production. In his printing house Mitrophane published the works of famous Georgian writers and poets such as the poem of Ilia Chavchavadze “The Ghost” and “The Mentor” of Akaki Tsereteli and many other books.
The Government donated to Lagidze the factory with its territory which was situated on Klara Tsetkin street №150 (now Tsinamdzgrishvili str. №150)
Mitrophane built the factory for the production of carbon dioxide, from where actually the manufacturing of dioxide developed.
The popularity of “Lagidze Waters” was so great and enormous that at the conferences, one held in 1943 in Tegeran and another in 1945 in Yalta, the participants had chance to taste “Lagidze Waters” during the event.
Lagidze was appointed as a main consultant in “Glavfruktvoda” in Moscow, which itself represented the Soviet Union`s Ministry of food industries. He was in charge of supervising of non-alcoholic beverages on a large scale. The magazine “Communist”of that period wrote: “The trust “Beer and lemonade of Georgia” produces new drink “lemonade” according to the recipe of M.Lagidze. Their new beverage will take the 40 percent of shares on USSR`s market for the production of non-alcoholic beverages”.
USA president Harry Truman sent 1000 bottles of Coca-Cola to Stalin as a gift. In response Stalin decided to send sparkling waters better than Coca-Cola, that is why in 1938 Lagidze was invited to Moscow for creating the new taste of lemonade. “Lagidze Waters” impressed Americans so much, that the president demanded to import waters in United States.
Mitrophane died at the age of 91.After the death of his grandfather, Tornike Lagidze continued his business. Starting his career as an ordinary employee soon he became the head of the factory.
Until 1991 “Lagidze Waters” took part in every food goods exhibitions worldwide.
